Business and industry partners have helped grow and develop the next generation of high-demand workers through the STEM Teacher Externships Program.

Each summer, the STEM Council matches some of Iowa’s most talented STEM educators with Workplace Hosts and helps build partnerships that enhance the workplace and the community’s future workforce. The STEM Teacher Externships Program builds bridges between Iowa workplaces and schools by equipping teachers with work experiences directly connected to classroom content. STEM Teacher Externship Translates into Classroom Experience with Greater Community Impact

Des Moines Christian Science Teacher Marc Pedersen took part in a STEM Teacher Externship Program at Kemin Industries.

Marc Pedersen, science teacher at Des Moines Christian School, partnered with Kemin Industries for the 2022 STEM Teacher Externship Program. Work-Based Learning for Teachers – Summer Externships

Industrial Technology Teacher John Doornenbal is a 2020 STEM Teacher Extern at Interstates in Sioux Center.

John Doornenbal, an industrial technology teacher at Sioux Center High School, is spending six weeks of his summer as a STEM Teacher Extern for Interstates, an electrical automation company in Sioux Center. As part of his externship experience, Doornenbal is learning about tasks in which each employee is involved and the skills needed to complete the task. Celebrating Ten Years of STEM Teacher Externships

The 2019 STEM Teacher Externship Forum capped another record-breaking summer and the tenth year of STEM Teacher Externships. Nearly 100 teacher externs, extern mentors and workplace hosts attended the event held at the Des Moines Area Community College Ankeny Campus (DMACC).

Tricia Reichert, Emmetsburg High School science teacher, is completing a six-week Iowa STEM Teacher Externship with MaxYield Cooperative this summer. In line with MaxYield’s mission of “Seeing More In Your Fields,” she has been tasked with assisting this progressive cooperative with “seeing more” in their young agronomy interns in terms of recruitment and retention.
