Council Strategic Priorities in the Hands of Implementation Teams

STEM Council Career Guidance and Implementation Working Group July forum.
The STEM Council Career Guidance and Implementation Working Group held a forum in July to better understand the current circumstances and coalesce career exploration into a coordinated statewide effort.

STEM Council Working Groups play a critical role, incubating actions and shaping the future of the STEM Council. More than 50 members of three working groups have devoted countless hours to supporting and enhancing STEM Council efforts. The working groups presented updates at the January STEM Advisory Council meeting and will focus on the following next steps.

  • The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in STEM Working Group is focused on promoting equity in STEM, especially increasing diversity of youth in current STEM programs and in the workforce. Some of the next steps include seeking and including diverse youth voices, partnering with youth and business to create pathways and increasing contact with STEM role models.
  • The first priority of the Creativity and Innovation Task Force was to set the foundation and connect resources, institutions, partners and others who may be outside of “traditional STEM” in ways that can enhance and strengthen transdisciplinary education.

The next phase is focused on connecting existing STEM and Arts schools and programs in Iowa, incorporating STEM and Arts in informal learning spaces with a focus on underserved and rural places and ensuring members of the working groups are represented in the six STEM regions.

  • The charge of the Career Guidance and Implementation Working Group was to develop recommended actions for the STEM Council to support career exploration and guidance, especially early exposure perhaps involving tactics like internships/career-linked learning for younger students as well as teachers/administrators.

The working group held a forum to better understand the current circumstances and coalesce career exploration into a coordinated statewide effort and will focus to enhance existing efforts and support new initiatives.
